Hudson Veterinary offers training and behavior seminars each month taught by Roy Spitalnik, ABTA, CGC. Sessions are held here at the hospital and cover many different aspects of canine behavior and training. Schedules with dates and times will be posted here on the web. There is limited space in the training classes, so please make sure to call our hospital (914) 762-0063 and let us know which class you are interested in.

Roy Spitalnik is certified by the American Behavior and Training Association as well as the AKC for Canine Good Citizen Evaluator. He has been training for eight years, and started as an apprentice for Steven Diller. Since then he has worked with service dogs, seeing eye guide dogs, the K-9 police unit, as well as on TV and movie sets. Currently he offers in home and group training sessions locally, and can be contacted to arrange an evaluation.

Dogs are animals that need to adapt to the human environment, and Roy's philosophy is to allow the dog to develop normally within that environment while teaching it skills enabling it to co-exist with their human counterparts. Roy uses biology, ethology and psychology to motivate the dog, using the most positive method, to attain the desired outcome.

Our hospital also recommends Peter Lynn, MST, MFA. Peter is a certified dog trainer with more than seven years of experience working with small classes, families and individuals of all ages. Peter is a teacher of remarkable skill and generosity who works to increase the comfort and confidence of both dog and dog owner. He has additional experiences as a writer (Peter holds a masters degree from Columbia University) and as an educator (Peter has a second masters degree in education and has taught high school both domestically and abroad). Classes focus on the needs of each family, offering patient and practical measures to solve behavioral problems, socialize dogs, and generally increase the joy of sharing your days with your dog. For more information on Peter and private classes, please visit his website: http://www.caninecounselor.com.

Housebreaking Seminar - "It's not just about where the bathroom is!"
Contrary to popular belief, housebreaking is not just about the bathroom spot. It's teaching your dog to observe the rules of your house! Chewing/destructiveness, lying on the furniture, hogging the bed, barking at/jumping on guests, etc. are all housebreaking issues. An effective housebreaking routine can also reduce the occurrence of aggression, anxiety/phobia, and even nervousness.

Learn how dogs interpret your home and their role in your family (their pack). And bring questions! This is an open forum and most of the time will be Q & A. Best of all…it's ABSOLUTELY FREE!

This class is guaranteed to not only improve your dog's general behavior, but your relationship as well. You can't afford to miss this, no matter what age or level of training your dog has. All family members are welcome but please, NO DOGS. And if I haven't already mentioned…it's FREE…FREE…FREE!!!

Please remember to call (914) 762-0063 and book your spot.

Puppy Kindergarten - 4 weeks
For pups under 7 months of age only!
First class is a HUMAN ONLY lecture.

This class will develop the skills and habitual behaviors necessary for the life of the modern pet dog. Much like human kindergarten, it focuses on the every day details of life to get your dog used to these things early. When we apply these skills at a young age, our puppies will become calmer during nail trims, more relaxed during veterinary exams, have better manners when guests visit the home and develop social skills. Skills taught:

  • "Ready"
  • "Come"
  • "Sit" at doorways
  • No pulling/jumping/barking
  • Checking ears & teeth
  • Nail trimming
This class is $125 prepay or $150 at the door.

Basic Obedience 101- 5 weeks
For any dog of any age
First class is a HUMAN ONLY lecture.
As the title indicates, this is the starting point for basic obedience and control. The goal is to create reliable obedience from the dog on a 6 ft. leash, and better communication skills from the handler. We clearly define all the commands from the dog's point-of-vw, and motivate them for a better understanding of how to "beomce correct." Along the way, you'll learn what role their own instincts play in their ability to learn and develop.
Skills taught:

  • "Ready"
  • "Sit"
  • "Down"
  • "Come"
  • "Heel"
  • "Stay"
  • "OK" release
This class is $150 prepay or $175 at the door.

Canine College - 4 weeks
Basic 101 is REQUIRED
No lecture class so remember to bring treats.
This class is a continuations of "Basic 101." We apply more distractions, time and distance to their come, stay and heeling skills. Our goal is to prepare your dog to be more focused and controlled in a social or more distracting setting. This is a great class for those of us who want to take our dog out on the town!
Skills taught:

  • "Come" w/ distance
  • "Heel" in motion
  • Long "Stay"
  • Distance and In-motion exercises
This class is $200 prepay or $250 at the door.
