Canine Influenza
21 July 2010 6:47pm
There have been reports of sporadic outbreaks of the Canine Flu in dogs. We have not yet seen a case of the flu this year at the Hudson Veterinary Hospital.
There is now a new proven, effective, and safe vaccine for the H3N8 dog flu. Most of the boarding facilities in our area are either requiring or recommending the vaccine. The vaccine is given twice (3 weeks apart) the first year, then yearly thereafter.
We recommend that any dog that is boarding get vaccinated. Owners should also consider vaccinating dogs that are groomed regularly or interact in packs of playing dog such as those at dog daycare or dog parks.
We will update you through our newly designed social media services as we hear more. Please look for updates on Facebook, Twitter, or on our website.
Red Fox Mange Alert!
21 July 2010 6:02pm
A local exterminator in Westchester County has sent out an email about a form of sarcoptic mange (scabies) that is on the rise due to the increased activities of foxes and coyotes.
In the last few weeks, the doctors of Hudson Veterinary Hospital have seen at least two cases of Red Fox Mange in dogs. Dogs present with severe itchy, red skin with or without secondary infection. Clinical signs are similar to that of allergies, but generally more severe.
There is no effective ways of preventing this uncommon disease. We recommend that you be on the look out for the clinical signs. These dogs usually scratch so much that they will wake you up in the middle of the night. If you think your dog has an issue, please contact us, or your veterinarian immediately. Diagnosis is made from clinical signs and a superficial skin test. Treatment is generally simple and safe after diagnosis is made.
Sarcoptic mange (Scabies) can be transmitted to people, so if your pet has been diagnosed, please contact your family physician.
